Mark Rothko wrote, "The satisfaction of the creative impulse is a basic, biological need, essential to the health of the individual….Art is one of the few important means known to man for the articulation of this impulse." This website is a platform that provides a space for experimentation – a place where one can create without the restrictions of budget or rules. At the crux, 53C is a creative outlet and its purpose is to serve those creatives who remain unfulfilled by the work of their employment.

Time and money can limit the creative process, as well as restrictions from clients or studios, which consequently suppresses the creative flow and thus it’s potential. The great benefit of experimentation without constraints, is the exploration of growth and potential in one's work that may never have been uncovered under strict conditions. This website allows and encourages that process. 53C consists of 5 printed pieces (publications, books or zines), 3 Art Objects and 1 piece starting with the letter “C.” The roster of work has no set time limit and new pieces are updated constantly on the website.

It can be argued that the best designers have been rule-breakers. I have created 53C as a platform to advocate a ‘no-rule’ philosophy. The (loose) briefs are designed to give  creatives permission to challenge and subvert the constraints of functionality, commercialism and trend.
Freedom is fundamental for creativity. Creativity is fundamental for evolution. You may need to know the rules to break them…but really, do we need them? After all, art is subjective...It can be said that breaking the rules is considered an art.
